An revised version of "Panic Attacks 101"

Having a panic attack feels like drowning.

You take in a big gulp of air before you go under,

Filling your lungs till the point of pain.

Then, slowly you’re sinking under the surface,

Kicking against the current to save yourself, yet you keep getting pushed farther away from the surface.

You stop struggling then, letting some of the air out, trying to release the pain in your chest as water pushes against you on all sides.

Your body starts to struggle then,

Craving the feeling of air filling your lungs only to release it back into the wild

Your body and brain fight against each other, one begging for you to open your mouth, only knowing you won't survive if you do.

Eventually your body wins,

water flows down your throat, choking you to the point that you  forget what it feels like to breathe.

All you know is pain,

that it hurts no matter which way you throw your body or cough.

Right before you think you are going to die you break surface, expelling everything in your lungs

sucking in all the oxygen you can take

The pain is still there but less so

You choke and cough until slowly you are able to take that first full breath.

That feeling is something so surreal that you’ll never forget.

You'll wonder how you could ever forget the feeling of breathing when it was always so simple.
